Final Event of the RESTORATION Project: Digital Technologies and Insurance Solutions for Agricultural Resilience

Florence, May 6, 2025 – The final dissemination event of the European project RESTORATION – InsuRancEs SoluTiOns to enhance crop production Resilience to extreme climATIc events by means of blOckchaiN and IoT technologies took place at the prestigious Villa Ruspoli in Florence. The project aims to strengthen crop resilience to extreme weather events through the integration of insurance schemes, blockchain, IoT sensors, and predictive tools.

 

The event gathered experts and stakeholders from academia, the agricultural sector, and insurance companies. After the institutional welcome by Prof. Enrico Marone, Prof. Sara Landini (scientific coordinator of the project), Prof. Romeo Bandinelli, and Prof. Camilla Dibari, the main project outcomes were presented.

 

During the morning session, the project’s research units showcased the most significant achievements:

 

  • The team from the Department of Industrial Engineering (DIEF) illustrated how blockchain technology and smart contracts can improve transparency and traceability along agri-food supply chains, enhancing trust between producers and consumers.
  • The DAGRI Department demonstrated how crop modeling and advanced monitoring tools (drones, sensors, satellite images) can assess future climate scenarios and define adaptation strategies for key crops in Tuscany, such as grapevines, olives, and durum wheat.
  • The DSG unit addressed the role of innovation in agricultural insurance, proposing reward mechanisms linked to risk reduction and supported by digital technologies.

 

 

A roundtable discussion followed, involving key public and private stakeholders including CNR, Ente Terre Regionali Toscane, Asnacodi Italia, AgriCat, Sicuragro, and CIA Toscana. Speakers discussed the challenges of risk management in agriculture and highlighted the importance of reliable digital tools for informed decision-making.

 

The event continued with the presentation of national and international research projects aligned with the theme of climate resilience in agriculture, such as Life ADA, Oenotrace, FAMOS, and studies from La Sapienza University and CREA.

 

The day concluded with a light lunch and informal networking among participants.
